Alumni Testimonials

Here’s some info on what some of our recent alumni have been up to:

Blaire Colvin

  • After graduating in May I started a masters program at UF in the Agronomy department and I should finish up in 2015. I am working on a project that deals with peanut maturity. One of the biggest challenges peanut producers face is determining the correct time to harvest their crop. Since peanuts are an indeterminate plant and  grow underground it is challenging to assess maturity.  The decision of when to harvest is very complex and peanut maturity is affected by many environmental factors. If the peanuts are harvested too early or too late there can be significant yield and profit loss for the grower. The findings from this project will help aid peanut growers in making the critical decision of when to harvest peanuts.
Joy Burnham
  • My name is Joy Burnham and I am 22 years old. I graduated from UF with my degree in Landscape and Nursery Horticulture with my minor in Agricultural Communication. Within Sigma Alpha I was Professional Development Chair for one semester and then I was elected President for the 2012-2013 school year. Currently I live in Gainesville and I am marrying my fiance, Nathan, at the end of October. After our wedding, we are moving to the Delray Beach area and I will begin my career as a Customer Service and Communications Specialist at Morning Dew Tropical Plants. Sigma Alpha helped me make many friends and become more confident in myself, and it was an experience I will never forget!
Taylor Ruth
  • I rushed Sigma Alpha in the Spring of my sophomore year at UF and was appointed historian during my junior year and elected 1st Vice President my senior year. During my time in the sorority I was able to grow professionally attending multiple Leadership Conventions with Alpha Gamma Rho. I majored in Microbiology but picked up Agricultural Communications to be able to take more courses with my sisters. I currently work for UF in the horticulture department researching genetic mutations in corn. I am in the process of applying to graduate school to pursue my master’s in Agricultural Communications and hope to conduct research on consumer perceptions on food safety and crop research.

Allison Karnbach

  • I’m Allison Karnbach and I graduated this past summer with a degree in Dietetics. I transferred to UF in my junior year and was scared coming into a big university this late. I decided to rush SA because I wanted to find girls who were like me and I’m so glad I did! I met girls that were the sweetest and I was able to learn so much about different agricultural majors I never would have known about. I will begin my dietetic internship at Florida Hospital this month and in about nine months I’ll sit for the state exam. I will be a registered dietitian and I want to work in pediatric weight management. I got to meet a couple SA alumni who became registered dietitians and it was comforting being able to ask them questions about everything. Go Gators! SA love.
